WS1: Deer control and management

What is WS1?

WS1 is an action under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme. It pays £105 per year for deer control and management.

What do I need to do?

* Produce a Deer Management Plan (DMP) in collaboration with your local Deer Officer/Woodland Officer, informed by a baseline deer habitat impact and activity assessment.

* Commence erecting additional deer monitoring exclosures in year 1, with number and location agreed with the Deer Officer/Woodland Officer.

* Carry out agreed levels of culling activity as specified in your DMP.

* Provide a report showing annual habitat impact assessments in significant woodland habitats, including a graded impact summary and photographic evidence.

What evidence do I need?

See GOV.UK guidance for evidence requirements and record-keeping obligations.

How much does WS1 pay?

WS1 pays £105 per year.

Which land is eligible?

It’s available for Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier on whole or part parcels where deer have been identified in the Woodland Management Plan. Deer should be identified as a threat to semi-natural woodlands, regeneration and/or where deer browsing negatively impacts on woodland features, ground flora or structure. If you include this as part of your Higher Tier application, the Forestry Commission will assess your application for this option before you are offered an agreement.
