SOH4: Winter cover following maize crops

What is SOH4?

SOH4 is an action under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme. It pays £203.00 per year for winter cover following maize crops.

What do I need to do?

* Establish a winter cover crop after maize harvest that will not be harvested as a cash crop.

* Establish a quick growing cover crop as soon as possible after maize harvest , usually no later than mid-October, or maintain an under-sown cover crop.

* Maintain the cover crop to be well-established during winter months (early December to late February), with leafy vegetation and minimal bare soil.

* You must not apply fertilisers or manures to the winter cover crop during autumn or winter months.

* You may destroy the cover crop before late winter if establishing an early-sown spring crop, but not more than 6 weeks before establishing the spring crop.

What evidence do I need?

  • You must keep written evidence that land entered into this action is not at risk of soil erosion or surface runoff. You can use the soil management plan produced for CSAM1 or SAM1 to identify this.

  • You must also keep evidence to show what you’ve done to complete this action, such as:

field operations at a land parcel level and associated invoices

photographs and other documentation

  • If it’s not clear that you’ve done this action in a way that could reasonably be expected to achieve its aim, we may ask for this evidence.

How much does SOH4 pay?

SOH4 pays £203.00 per year.
