Managing fields and parcels

Written by Sven Poppelmann

Land Data is where the structure of your farm lives - parcels, land covers, fields and hedgerows. Most of what [[company/farmwalk|Farmwalk]] does, from compliance scoring to evidence linking, leans on this layer being [[company/accurate|accurate]].

Opening Land Data

Open the farm and either click Land Data in the tab bar, or go to Farming > Land Data. Both routes show the same data.

Parcels tab

The Parcels tab shows a pie chart of land use ([[company/arable|arable]], grassland, woodland and so on) plus headline metrics: total hectares, parcel count and hedgerow length. Toggle between grid and list view. Each parcel card shows its area, land use, soil type and a "View on Map" link.

Boundaries tab

The Boundaries tab gives you the count of RPA parcels, hedgerows and any custom boundaries you've drawn. The first few hedgerows appear as cards with their condition badges so you can see at a glance whether anything is overdue for survey.

Import / Export tab

Two cards explain the supported formats:

  • Import - shapefile, GeoJSON or KML. Coordinate systems are detected and reprojected if needed.

  • Export - download your parcels and boundaries in the same formats for use in other GIS tools.

Where land data comes from

  • RPA - import directly using your SBI

  • [[company/land-app|Land App]] - [[company/connect|connect]] via API key and select layers

  • Manual - draw parcels and hedgerows yourself on the map

  • File import - upload shapefiles or GeoJSON exports

Tips

  • Get land data right before adding scheme agreements - assigning options to the wrong parcel area causes compliance headaches

  • Re-import from the RPA when your land cover changes (e.g. after a code change application)

  • Keep your hedgerow records in sync with the map - the survey schedule depends on them
