Carbon and soil modelling

The Carbon module models your farm's soil carbon stocks and projects how land use changes could affect them over time. It combines your soil test data with crop history and climate assumptions to produce per-parcel baselines, scenario comparisons and model runs you can use for reporting or decision-making.

This is a Pro-licensed module, available on request. If you do not see it in the sidebar, contact your organisation administrator or Regeno support to enable it.

Overview

The Carbon summary screen gives you a farm-level snapshot:

  • Baseline stock - per-parcel soil carbon stock and grade (A/B/C), derived from your soil profiles

  • Latest run - the most recent model run's scenario deltas and time-series

  • Farm totals - aggregated carbon across all parcels

  • Readiness - shows what is needed before you can run the model (climate data, soil profiles, crop history, a completed run)

Soil profiles

Each parcel has a derived soil profile showing clay content, bulk density and soil organic carbon (SOC) with provenance for every value. Profiles are depth-harmonised and include a peat flag and stock calculation. Profiles must be computed before the model can run.

Crop year history

The model uses your farm's crop-year history - one row per parcel per harvest year - covering land use, crop type, yield, residue handling, cover cropping and tillage. You can add rows manually or import them. This history drives the scenario projections.

Scenarios

Scenarios are saved "what-if" configurations. Each scenario holds a set of modelling assumptions (tillage practices, residue management, cover crop adoption and so on) that you can compare against the baseline. Create scenarios to explore different land management paths and see their carbon impact over time.

Model runs

A run executes the carbon model for your farm. You can run the baseline, one or more saved scenarios, or custom configuration overrides. Each run records its status (running, completed or failed), the time window it covered and the results. The latest completed run's results are what the summary screen displays.

Modelling assumptions

The settings screen shows the resolved modelling assumptions - the package defaults, your farm's overrides and the metadata for each parameter. Farm-editable overrides can be adjusted (for example, local climate factors or tillage depth assumptions) and cleared back to defaults at any time.

Tips

  • Compute soil profiles first - the model cannot run without them

  • Keep crop-year history up to date - the model's accuracy depends on it

  • Create scenarios for the land management changes you are considering, then compare runs side by side

  • Use the readiness indicators on the summary screen to see what is blocking a run
