Surveying your hedgerows

Written by Sven Poppelmann

Hedgerow surveys record the condition of each hedge on the farm and feed schemes such as SFI hedgerow actions and CS boundary options. The Hedgerow Surveys screen lets you plan, capture and review surveys all in one place.

Opening Hedgerow Surveys

There are two ways in:

  • From the farm tab bar, click Hedgerow Surveys

  • Or open Farming > Hedgerow Surveys

Overview tab

The Overview tab shows headline metrics - total length in km, number of hedgerows, SFI points and surveys due - alongside a condition donut (good / fair / poor) and a list of recent surveys. A "Surveys Due" alert lists hedgerows that haven't been surveyed in over 12 months.

Hedgerows tab

Search for a hedgerow by name and filter by condition (good, fair, poor or not surveyed). The table shows name, length, condition badge, species count and the last survey date.

Surveys tab

The Surveys tab is the full register of completed surveys, with assessor names, dates and the underlying scoring detail.

Schedule tab

The Schedule tab shows three counters - never surveyed, overdue, and up to date - plus a list of hedgerows that need attention with a Start Survey button next to each. When everything is current you'll see "All hedgerows are up to date!"

Recording a new survey

  1. Click Start Survey next to a hedgerow (or add a survey from the hedgerow detail view)

  2. Walk the hedge and enter the structural and species observations

  3. Add photos as evidence where useful

  4. Save - the condition score and date are then linked to the hedgerow

Tips

  • Survey on a dry day - photos and species ID are far easier in good light

  • Use the Schedule tab at the start of each year to plan a route around the overdue hedges

  • If a hedgerow is missing from the list, add it on the Map first using the draw hedgerow tool
