What is GS9?

GS9 is an action under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme. It pays £676.00 per year for management of wet grassland for breeding waders.

What do I need to do?

* Do not plough, cultivate, or reseed the grassland, unless agreed in writing with the RPA.

* Do not use pesticides , except for herbicides to spot-treat or weed-wipe to control specific weeds.

* Do not cut silage/hay/haylage or rushes before 15 July (or specified date).

* Do not operate machinery or disturb birds during the bird breeding season (mid-March to mid-July) or non-breeding birds (November to March).

* Do not carry out drainage works without the RPA’s written permission.

What evidence do I need?

  • Where there’s uncertainty about whether or not the aims of the options have been delivered, we will take into account any records or evidence you may have kept to demonstrate delivery of the aims of the option. This will include any steps you’ve taken to follow the recommended management set out above. It’s your responsibility to keep such records if you want to rely on these to support your claim.

Receipted invoices, consents or permissions connected with the work

Field operations at the parcel level, including associated invoices

A grazing activity record for any sites grazed

Evidence that you are following a recommended fertiliser management system or that you qualify as a low intensity farmer

How much does GS9 pay?

GS9 pays £676.00 per year.

Which land is eligible?

It’s available for Countryside Stewardship Mid Tier and Higher Tier on whole or part parcels on permanent grassland that is one of the following. Coastal or floodplain grazing marsh identified as priority habitat Other grassland identified as habitat for breeding waders The grassland must already support breeding waders (curlew, lapwing, redshank or snipe) or have high potential for being restored for them.
